Banofi is a plant-based leather made from banana crop waste. It was created to provide a vegan alternative to animal and plastic leather.
The traditional leather industry leads to excessive carbon emissions, huge water consumption, and toxic waste during the tanning process.
Banofi also recycles waste from banana trees, which only produce fruit once in their lifetime. As the world’s largest banana producer, India produces 4 tons of waste for every ton of bananas produced, most of which is dumped.
The main raw material is made from fibers extracted from banana crop waste used to produce Banofi.
These fibers are mixed with a mixture of natural gums and adhesives and coated with multiple layers of color and coating. This material is then coated on a fabric backing, resulting in a durable and strong material that is 80-90% bio-based.
Banofi claims that its leather uses 95% less water than animal leather and has 90% less carbon emissions. The brand hopes to achieve a completely bio-based material in the future.
